Happiness Takes (A Little) Magic | The Wirecutter →
I posted this to Twitter yesterday but it’s been on my mind a fair bit over the past 24 hours so I wanted to post it again here. The post talks about the firehose of information that many of us are tapped into and consume on a daily basis and how much of it is actually valuable. Or perhaps more importantly, how much of it actually makes us more enlightened, even happier. Take a look back at...

– Interesting to see Dorsey positioning Twitter as an information network more so than a social network. I’d have to agree, I use it much more as a tool to share and discover information than I do to connect with people.

– http://parislemon.com/post/15627530949/antitrust Twitter has already responded to the announcement stating their discomfort in having their data excluded from Google search, no word yet from Facebook. US music sales increase for the first time since... →
Over the past few years I’ve struggled with the paradox that on one hand music is incredibly valuable to me, yet on the other hand I can obtain it easily for free. I would try to justify not paying for albums by supporting my favorite bands by going to see them in concert when they came to town but the truth is, my hard core concert going days have come and gone. Then a couple months ago I...

Why 'Pages' on Google Isn't Just Another Facebook... →
I don’t disagree that there are some compelling features that differentiate Google+ Pages from Facebook Pages but, for the most part, they don’t bring anything new or exciting to the table for the user. Integrating into Google’s ever growing ecosystem makes great business sense for a brand to create a G+ Page but it does nothing to make me as a user want to follow that Page. If G+ wants to survive...

Engaging in the social space on behalf of a brand is a lot like an actor improvising. Only when an actor fully understands and inhabits his character is he free to improvise. He is free to improvise because he knows his character so well that he can go off script and be confident that what he’s doing will be in character. The same goes for community managers - the more defined the brand and...

HOW THE WEST WAS WON
There seems to be a persistent (and disheartening) belief amongst marketers, both client side and agency, that social media is akin to the wild west - a place bereft of rules or reason where outlaws shoot first and ask questions later. I’m frequently amazed by how often I come across brands whose social media efforts not only feel totally arbitrary but are also totally off-brand. A lot of...

Future of social networks: Will Facebook remain... →
“The big question for the future of social networking isn’t whether Facebook will be the largest and most influential site five years from now. It’s whether it will be the only one. Will Facebook be the exclusive catalog of our interests and relationships, or will it coexist with several others?” I’m not sure it’s quite time for all the other platforms to throw...
